Babies and Marines

I’m a little late getting this week’s review post out.  We’ve had a little lull for a couple of weeks, but we’re gearing up for the big Thanksgiving rush next week.  Even though there has been a little lull, we’re still doing some great cakes here at Twiggs Bakery.  We actually had four weddings last weekend which is a couple more than we usually have for mid-November weekends.  First is a beautiful double line drape cake with silver dragees.  It’s a stately cake that went to the Emerald Yacht run by Hornblower Cruises.

I got a call at the beginning of November asking how quickly we could make a wedding cake.  Usually those questions are from people looking for a cake for the next day or weekend.  But this wedding was actually 2 weekends away — far closer than most folks book their wedding cakes, but still very doable, especially at this time of year.  The bakery the bride had originally booked had closed without notifying her.  She figured it out on her own after no one returned repeated phone calls and she drove to the bakery to see what was going on.  Thanks to yelp, she found us.  Here’s their cake, delivered to the Oceanview Room at the Naval Subbase.

Baby Showers are great business for us and we did three of them last week.  First is an unusual one modelled after the baby shower invitation which the hostess described as having a “Tim Burton-esque” feel.  Next is a stately three tiered fondant cake with a very subtle pink damask on the center tier.  Finally, a sheet cake with the classic Dr. Seuss “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” theme.

The Marines were founded in November of 1775 and every year there’s a big Marine Birthday Party — a formal event for Marines and their spouses / dates.  We’ve done a few cakes for the galas over the years.  This year we did one for the 1st Maintenance Batallion.  The cake has the batallions emblem in the upper left and right corners and the Marine emblem in the lower center.  Fondant Rope brushed with gold lustre dust surrounded the cake and the Marine Emblem.  It was a handsome, striking cake.

Finally, here’s some smaller images of other cakes we did last week.  There’s a Day of the Dead wedding cake very festively decorated in Mexican party flags, a Detroit Lions cake for a guy whose wedding cake we did 3 weeks ago, a Hungry Caterpillar cake (always popular with the 1 and 2 year old crowd), Hello Kitty in 3D atop a birthday cake, a sweet little cake with pink sparkles and pink flowers for a little girl, a cake surrounded by white chocolate straws with tuxedo strawberries and finally, a wedding cake with red, white and blue flowers that went to the Admiral Kidd in Point Loma.  Click on any image to see a larger one.

Finally, Thanksgiving is next week, as hard as that is to believe.  Thanksgiving is all about pies.  We have pumpkin, chocolate pecan and apple pies baked fresh here at Twiggs.   We also have a fantastic pumpkin cake and a spice cake with chocolate frosting that we’ll be running as specials through December.  We are open Thanksgiving day until 2pm so you can pick up your dessert on the big day itself.  Or come in for breakfast before the big afternoon feast!  We’ll be taking orders until about 4pm on Tuesday.  After that, it will be first come, first served on any pies and cakes we have.    I’m very thankful to all of you for reading this blog and supporting Twiggs!
