The HOT Weekend

Uncategorized

This past weekend was HOT which makes decorating and delivering cakes a bit of a challenge.  But we survived.  Fortunately it was a slower weekend for us at the bakery — though our breakfast and coffeehouse business was slammed.  We only had three weddings this weekend and only one of them outdoors, so it wasn’t too bad.  But we did have several other orders and I think they all came out great.

First up is a new wedding cake design for me here at Twiggs — one inspired by Hobnail Glass.  Emily had done the last cake with the million of small dots (those in a random pattern), so I figured it was my turn to take a tedious design like this on.  I actually don’t mind doing patterns like this;  it really becomes a zen experience for me and I was super happy with how it turned out.  This was the cake which was sitting outside on a 90 degree Saturday afternoon, but it was in the shade at the lovely Darlington House in La Jolla so it survived.

Next is an homage to the 80’s for 13 year old Brittany.  She found this design somewhere and her parents contacted us about replicating it EXACTLY.  They wanted repeated assurances that we would recreate the cake EXACTLY.  I told them sure and I actually think our version came out nicer than the inspiration picture.  I delivered this and the birthday girl was thrilled with the cake.  Whew.

Next up is a Dr. Seuss inspired cake for a brother and sister.  I’d done a very similar cake about 2 years ago and it’s been on our website since then.  Those pictures sold this cake.  The cake is a combination of Dr. Seuss characters and quotes.  It’s interersting researching Dr. Seuss quotes when you’re older — there’s a surprising amount of wisdom distilled into a few whimsical lines.  I loved working on this cake.  The first picture is full size, but the other pics are smaller ones you can click on to see larger images and see all sides of the cake.

Finally, some more smaller images of other cakes we did this past week.  There’s a pretty 25th Anniversary cake covered in fondant with random swirls and pink and orange ribbons.  Then a simple cake that went to the serene Estancia.  Florist Suzan Merrill did the gorgeous cascade of orchids.  Then there’s a pink and gold box and a fun cake for an army doctor.  Lastly, we have a cake resembling a tire rim and a cake with a replica of a Converse shoe.  You can click on any image to see a larger version.

So that’s it for another weekend.  After two rather sedate weekends, we’re back to crazy busy this coming weekend and it looks like it remains that way for the next month.  We’re ramping up into fall wedding season and we’ve got a ton of weddings coming up.  As always, I’m extremely grateful for the volume of business we have now and how busy we are in all aspects of our business — bakery, breakfast, cafe and coffeehouse.  I’ll close this post with some wisdom from Dr. Seuss:

Today is your day!  Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!
